The Dinerstein Companies (TDC): A 70 Year Legacy of Quality, Innovation and Growth
Founded in 1955 in Houston, Texas by brothers Bill and Ted Dinerstein, The Dinerstein Companies began as a builder of single-family homes before expanding into townhomes and apartment communities by the mid-1960s.
Throughout the 1970s, TDC became a prominent developer in Houston, known for large-scale apartment projects and effective property management throughout the city. In 1972, Jack Dinerstein joined the company, becoming President in 1975, with Tom Caltagirone joining soon after.
By the early 1980s, TDC owned and managed properties across Houston, San Antonio, Lake Jackson, and South Texas, including mini-warehouses and retail centers, before eventually expanding into Florida by the mid-1980s. By the late 1980’s and early 1990’s, TDC had further broadened its footprint across the Southeast and Midwest, diversifying into retirement housing, condominiums, commercial centers, and property management business across the country. A major milestone came in 1997 with the launch of Sterling University Housing, a pioneering move into the modern, off-campus student housing sector.
In the early 2000s, TDC strengthened its leadership team with the addition of Brian Dinerstein and John Caltagirone. In 2004, the company sold a portfolio of 28 student housing assets to GMH Communities, facilitating GMH’s IPO. During this period, TDC transitioned into working with larger, institutional investors and opened its first West Coast office in Los Angeles in 2007. Brad Dinerstein joined the following year in 2008, bringing with him a further emphasis on design efficiency and collaboration.
During the 2010s, TDC focused on larger-scale, sustainable developments, including podium-style, mixed-use, and high-rise multi-family and student housing projects. The company soon became one of the largest developers of LEED-certified apartments in the country, earning the U.S. Green Building Council’s Builder of the Year award in 2015.
Since 2011, TDC has capitalized over $5 billion in new developments and acquired over $1.3 billion in residential and mixed-use properties and launched a full-service investment management platform.
Today, TDC is a nationally recognized, vertically integrated firm specializing in development, construction, property management, and investment management of multifamily, student housing, and build-to-rent properties across the country.
Since 2011, The Dinerstein Companies has capitalized over $5.02 billion in new development and acquired over $1.3 billion in multi-family, student housing, or mix-used properties.
Today, The Dinerstein Companies is a nationally renowned, vertically integrated apartment development, construction, management and investment company focused on multifamily, student housing, and build-to-rent properties in California, Denver, Phoenix, Texas, Nashville, Central Florida, and the Carolinas. TDC celebrates it’s 70th anniversary in 2025.
